Where it came from
DeadAss is an independent manga series created by the artist hakei. The work emerged from the vibrant digital art scene, where the author utilized a distinct, expressive style to explore themes of dark humor and existential absurdity. By blending unconventional visual motifs with deadpan narrative pacing, hakei crafted a project that functions both as a showcase for their evolving technical skills and as a commentary on the tropes of the contemporary medium.
The design of the volume reflects a minimalist aesthetic intended to juxtapose the chaotic nature of the internal panels. Critics and readers within the independent publishing community have noted hakei’s focus on character anatomy and high-contrast ink work, which serves to ground the more surreal elements of the plot. As a self-published entry, the book represents a significant effort in creator-owned storytelling, gaining a modest but dedicated following among enthusiasts of experimental and underground manga.
