Death Frenzy

Death Frenzy, known in Japan as Shigurui, is a seinen manga series written by Norio Nanjou and illustrated by Takayuki Yamaguchi. Serialized in Champion Red from 2003 to 2010, the work is based on the first chapter of the novel Suruga-jou Gozen Jiai by Norio Nanjou. The narrative is set during the Edo period under the rule of Tokugawa Tadanaga, focusing on the brutal realities of martial arts and the complex psychological toll of the samurai code.

Takayuki Yamaguchi’s art style is noted for its hyper-realistic, often grotesque depiction of violence and anatomy, which serves to emphasize the tragic nature of the story. The series was well-regarded by critics for its uncompromising tone and intricate storytelling, distinguishing itself from more traditional action-oriented samurai manga. It was subsequently adapted into an acclaimed anime series directed by Hiroshi Hamasaki, further cementing its reputation as a somber exploration of feudal obsession and death.
