Decameron

Written by Giovanni Boccaccio in the mid-14th century, The Decameron stands as a foundational masterpiece of Western literature. Composed in the wake of the Black Death, the collection of one hundred tales follows ten young people who flee the plague-stricken city of Florence for a villa in the countryside, where they entertain one another with stories over the course of ten days. The work is celebrated for its humanistic approach, shifting the focus of literature from purely theological concerns to the wit, tragedy, and complexities of everyday human experience.
