Deepwoken

Deepwoken is a high-difficulty, permadeath role-playing game developed by the studio Monolith Philanthropy, led by the developer known as PizzaYes. Released on the Roblox platform in late 2021, it emerged from a desire to create a more sophisticated, punishing experience within the engine, drawing significant mechanical inspiration from titles like Dark Souls and various rogue-like games. The project was conceived to challenge the typical conventions of the platform by emphasizing complex combat, deep character progression, and an unforgiving atmosphere.

The aesthetic and design philosophy of the game were heavily influenced by dark fantasy and oceanic lore, aiming to provide a sense of isolation and discovery. PizzaYes and the development team focused on hand-crafted environments and an original orchestral score to distance the title from typical Roblox offerings. Upon its release, it received critical acclaim from its player base for its technical ambition and intricate world-building, though it remains a niche title due to its steep learning curve and the permanent consequences of player death.
