Dekiru Neko wa Kyou mo Yuuutsu

Dekiru Neko wa Kyou mo Yuuutsu, or The Masterful Cat Is Depressed Again Today, began as a web manga serial in 2018 before moving to the Monthly Shonen Sirius magazine. Authored by Hitsuzi Yamada, the series centers on Saku, an overwhelmed office worker, and Yukichi, an oversized, impeccably domestic housecat who manages her life. The narrative blends slice-of-life comedy with the relatable exhaustion of modern urban adulthood, turning the trope of the helpful familiar into a deadpan commentary on self-care and domestic labor.

Yamada’s design work for the series is defined by the stark, humorous contrast between the hyper-realistic, stoic, and towering figure of Yukichi and the frantic, messy environment of Saku’s daily existence. The art style emphasizes Yukichi’s expressive body language rather than dialogue, allowing the cat’s silent competence to serve as the comedic anchor. The series received significant acclaim for its gentle tone, leading to a successful anime adaptation that brought further attention to its unique premise.
