Where it came from
Devil Wants to Hug, or Mo Dao Zu Shi, originated as a popular web novel by Mo Xiang Tong Xiu, which was later adapted into the manhua series illustrated by Chi Yu. The series emerged from the vibrant Chinese online literature scene, centering on the complex relationship between two powerful cultivators, Wei Wuxian and Lan Wangji. This adaptation was developed to capture the intricate world-building and emotional depth of the original narrative, translating the sweeping fantasy landscapes and character dynamics into a visual medium.
Chi Yu was chosen to helm the visual interpretation, bringing a polished, ethereal aesthetic that aligns with the xianxia genre. The character designs focus on contrasting the bold, expressive nature of the protagonist with the disciplined, serene appearance of his counterpart. Upon its release, the manhua was received with significant enthusiasm from both long-time fans of the source material and new readers, praised for its detailed linework and its success in maintaining the core atmospheric tension of the original story.
