Devilman (Pre-Serialization)

The pre-serialization drafts and conceptual sketches for Go Nagai's Devilman emerged in the late 1960s as the creator sought to evolve his work from the comedic tone of his earlier titles toward a darker, more nihilistic narrative. These early iterations represent the experimental phase where Nagai refined the character's aesthetic, shifting from more traditional heroic tropes to the visceral, demonic imagery that would define the final work. This period of development was deeply influenced by the burgeoning counterculture movement in Japan and Nagai's desire to reflect the encroaching moral decay he perceived in modern society.

Designed by Go Nagai himself, the pre-serialization material captures the foundational evolution of the protagonist, Akira Fudo, and his monstrous alter ego. The illustrations from this time reflect a raw, kinetic energy, prioritizing psychological horror over the polish of the finished serial. While these early concepts were not meant for public consumption at the time, they were received by Nagai's editorial team as a radical departure from mainstream manga standards, setting the stage for one of the most influential and controversial series in the history of the medium.
