Diary of a tour through Great Britain in 1795, with an intr. and notes by D. MacRitchie

Written in 1795 by the Scottish minister William MacRitchie, this diary chronicles his extensive travels across England, providing a detailed contemporary account of the landscape, industry, and society during the late eighteenth century. The manuscript remained in private hands for over a century before being rediscovered and prepared for publication by David MacRitchie, who contributed the introduction and scholarly notes to contextualize the author's observations for a broader audience.

The 1897 published edition serves as an important primary source for historians interested in the socio-economic conditions of Britain at the end of the Georgian era. David MacRitchie’s editorial work focused on preserving the authenticity of the minister’s voice while clarifying the geographical and cultural references that might have otherwise obscured the text. Upon its release, the volume was recognized for its candid, unpretentious perspective on a nation experiencing the early shifts of the Industrial Revolution.
