Dino-Riders originated in 1988 as a multimedia franchise developed by Tyco Toys, intended to capitalize on the immense popularity of dinosaurs and science fiction toy lines of the era. The property was launched alongside an animated television series produced by Marvel Productions, which established a narrative featuring the benevolent Valarians and the villainous Rulons. The core concept focused on extraterrestrial factions arriving on Earth and weaponizing prehistoric creatures with futuristic armor and artillery.

The toy line is particularly noted for its intricate industrial design, which leaned heavily into the 'science meets nature' aesthetic prevalent in late 1980s action figure culture. While the associated media was short-lived, the physical models were lauded for their high level of detail and mechanical complexity. The Japanese distribution and spin-off manga adaptation by Tanaka Tetsuo sought to adapt this Western-developed concept for the domestic market, expanding the visual lore of the dinosaur-and-tech synthesis for a new audience.
