Where it came from
Dolls is a dark, psychological manga series created by the duo known as naked ape, which consists of writer Otoh Saki and artist Nakamura Tomomi. Serialized beginning in the mid-2000s, the work emerged during a period of rising interest in manga that explored forensic pathology and the moral complexities of the justice system. The series follows members of the Tokyo Metropolitan Police Department's Doll Division, a specialized unit tasked with investigating serial murders.
The design of the series is heavily influenced by the gothic aesthetic and the tension between clinical detachment and emotional volatility. Naked ape focused on a stylized, high-contrast visual approach to emphasize the brutal nature of the crimes against the introspective, often fragile psychological states of the protagonists. Upon its release, it was noted for its departure from traditional procedural narratives, favoring a moody, character-driven exploration of trauma and humanity that resonated with fans of mature-themed manga.
