Where it came from
Dororo was originally serialized in Weekly Shonen Sunday in 1967, emerging from Osamu Tezuka's desire to experiment with darker, more mature thematic elements within the shonen demographic. Set during the Sengoku period, the story follows Hyakkimaru, a young man born with missing organs and limbs as a result of his father's pact with demons. The narrative follows his quest to reclaim his body parts by defeating forty-eight demons, accompanied by the young thief Dororo.
Tezuka’s design for the series leaned into a blend of historical tragedy and folklore-inspired fantasy, contrasting the stark, visceral nature of Hyakkimaru's struggle with the levity and resourcefulness of Dororo. While the manga was initially influenced by the success of period dramas in cinema at the time, it was recognized for its philosophical inquiries into morality and the human condition. The series has since become a foundational work in the dark fantasy genre of manga, seeing numerous adaptations across animation and live-action media.
