Where it came from
Dragon Zakura was created by mangaka Mita Norifusa and serialized in Kodansha's Morning magazine starting in 2003. The narrative follows a down-on-his-luck former biker lawyer, Kenji Sakuragi, who takes on the challenge of transforming a failing, low-ranking private high school into a top-tier academic institution by coaching a group of students to pass the entrance exam for the prestigious University of Tokyo. The series serves as both a social critique of the Japanese education system and a practical manual for test-taking strategies.
The visual and narrative design is grounded in a stark, pragmatic realism, reflecting Mita's interest in character psychology and structural institutional flaws. Rather than focusing solely on academic tropes, the manga emphasizes the psychological pressures of the Japanese examination culture. Upon its release, the work received significant critical acclaim for its unconventional approach to the educational genre, ultimately winning the Kodansha Manga Award and the Excellence Prize at the Japan Media Arts Festival, which helped cement its status as a seminal piece of educational manga.
