Where it came from
Dramacon is a three-volume original English-language manga series written and illustrated by Svetlana Chmakova, first published by Tokyopop starting in 2005. The series emerged during a period of significant growth for manga in the North American market, capturing the subculture of anime conventions. Chmakova developed the narrative to reflect her own experiences attending these events, focusing on the intersection of creative ambition, fandom, and teenage identity.
The series follows Christie Leroux, an aspiring writer who attends a convention to pitch her manga script to a professional artist. Chmakova’s art style bridges the gap between traditional Japanese manga aesthetics and a distinct Western narrative sensibility. The work was well-received upon its release for its grounded, relatable portrayal of convention culture, earning praise for its humor and emotional authenticity within the burgeoning OEL manga genre.
