Drop was originally published in 2005 as an autobiographical novel by Japanese comedian Hiroshi Shinagawa, detailing his turbulent teenage years spent within the delinquent subculture of the 1990s. The narrative focuses on the protagonist's transition from a regular school life into the world of street fighting and gang dynamics, drawing heavily on Shinagawa's own experiences navigating the social hierarchies of Japanese youth culture.

Following the success of the novel, the work was adapted into a long-running manga series illustrated by Dai Suzuki. The adaptation sought to capture the visceral energy and intense character dynamics of the original prose through a gritty, stylized aesthetic common to the delinquency manga genre. It was well-received by audiences for its balance of comedic timing and dramatic character growth, eventually serving as the source material for a feature film adaptation in 2009.
