Where it came from
Dune: Red Plague is a short story written by Brian Herbert and Kevin J. Anderson, set within the expansive universe originally created by Frank Herbert. It serves as a companion piece to the authors' broader 'Schools of Dune' trilogy, which explores the historical origins of the Bene Gesserit, the Mentats, and the Navigators. This specific narrative was developed to bridge gaps in the prequel timeline, providing readers with additional context regarding the biological and political crises that threatened the nascent Imperium.
The story reflects the authors' long-term effort to expand the franchise’s lore, focusing on themes of planetary health and institutional survival. Brian Herbert and Kevin J. Anderson designed the work to maintain continuity with the expansive scope of the original series while utilizing the pacing common to supplemental digital releases. Upon its release, it was received primarily by the dedicated fan base of the modern expanded Dune canon, functioning as an intentional expansion of the narrative backdrop rather than a standalone literary endeavor.
