Eden: a dramatic oratorio in 3 acts ; the poem written by Robert Bridges ; (op. 40)

Commissioned for the Leeds Triennial Musical Festival, Eden was composed by Charles Villiers Stanford and set to a libretto by the poet Robert Bridges. Completed in 1891, the work represented a significant attempt to synthesize Victorian orchestral music with high-minded allegorical verse, aiming for a grand scale that reflected the late-nineteenth-century British appetite for large-scale choral oratorios.

The reception of the work was decidedly mixed, as contemporary critics often found the collaboration between Stanford's formal musical structures and Bridges' dense, literary text to be somewhat unwieldy.
