Where it came from
Eel Man emerged from the creative output of Joyworks, a studio known for its contribution to the niche spectrum of Chinese web-based comics and character-driven media. The series was developed during a period of rapid expansion in the domestic digital art market, aiming to blend surrealist character design with the narrative pacing typical of contemporary character-focused short-form storytelling.
The character design reflects an intentional departure from traditional hero archetypes, favoring an aquatic, abstract aesthetic that prioritizes visual texture over standard humanoid proportions. The work was initially received within digital forums as a stylistic curiosity, noted primarily for its unconventional silhouette and the thematic exploration of its titular protagonist's transformation.
