This volume emerged during the 19th-century German educational tradition, a period marked by a rigorous focus on philology and the systematic categorization of national literature. It served as a pedagogical tool designed to bridge the gap between reading exercises and literary analysis, specifically intended for use in 'Bürgerschulen'—the civic schools catering to the growing middle class. By providing commentary on select representative excerpts, the compilers aimed to offer a structured, accessible entry point into the German literary canon for both classroom instruction and independent study.

The editorial philosophy behind the collection reflects the era's didactic approach, which prioritized the 'Musterstück' or exemplary text as the primary vehicle for cultural and intellectual development. The work was organized to complement existing readers and anthologies, reflecting the highly centralized, standardized approach to curriculum development that characterized the period. As a functional textbook, it was crafted to provide a disciplined framework for understanding the works of preeminent writers, positioning the study of literature as a pillar of civic education and personal self-improvement.
