Where it came from
El Halcón -The Hawk- is a historical manga series written and illustrated by Aoike Yasuko, originally serialized in the late 1970s. Set against the backdrop of 16th-century England during the reign of Queen Elizabeth I, the narrative centers on Edmound, a privateer in the British Navy. The series is celebrated for its lush, detailed art style and its sophisticated exploration of political intrigue and naval adventure, reflecting the author's signature penchant for historical settings and complex, morally ambiguous protagonists.
Aoike Yasuko crafted the series during a prolific period of her career, drawing inspiration from the sweeping scope of British maritime history. The design of the characters and the period-accurate costuming were highly regarded for their elegance and technical precision. Upon its release, the manga was well-received by readers of the era for providing a mature, atmospheric departure from the standard shojo tropes of the time, eventually earning a legacy as a classic within the genre.
