Empathy for the Devil: How to Help People Overcome Drugs and Alcohol Problems

Empathy for the Devil was written by Phil Harris, a professional with a background in addiction recovery, to offer a pragmatic guide for those seeking to support loved ones through substance abuse challenges. The book emerged from the context of modern recovery literature, which increasingly emphasizes compassionate, non-confrontational communication strategies over traditional, authoritative models of intervention.

The design and approach of the book reflect a focus on accessibility and psychological support. Harris prioritizes empathetic engagement as the primary tool for change, steering away from the shame-based rhetoric that has historically dominated recovery discourse. The work has been noted for its grounded tone, aimed at providing practical emotional tools for families and friends navigating the complex dynamics of dependency.
