Where it came from
The Encyclopaedia Mundarica is an exhaustive linguistic and cultural record of the Mundari people, compiled primarily by the Jesuit missionary John W. Hoffmann in the early 20th century. Working alongside dedicated Mundari scholars and assistants in Chota Nagpur, India, Hoffmann sought to create a comprehensive dictionary and ethnographic guide to preserve a language that was then primarily oral and facing external cultural pressures.
The work is noted for its immense scale and detail, documenting the nuanced vocabulary, folklore, and social structures of the Munda-speaking communities. While Hoffmann was the primary architect of the project, its design reflects a collaborative effort to codify a complex linguistic system into a readable reference format, which was eventually published in multiple volumes that remain an essential resource for linguists and anthropologists today.
