Where it came from
Published in the late 19th century, this volume serves as a comprehensive manual intended to standardize the rules and strategies for a vast array of parlor and card games popular during the Victorian era. Robert Frederick Foster, a prolific author and authority on bridge and card game theory, curated this collection to provide a definitive reference for social gatherings, aiming to settle disputes and provide clear instruction for both novices and seasoned players.
The design of the work reflects the pedagogical style of the period, emphasizing logical categorization and accessible prose to demystify complex rules. By codifying games that were previously transmitted through oral tradition or inconsistent pamphlets, Foster’s encyclopedia gained recognition for its meticulous approach, becoming a staple in domestic libraries and a standard reference work for those seeking to master the social etiquette and competitive nuances of indoor gaming.
