Engage Kiss originated as an original multimedia project spearheaded by Aniplex, premiering as a television anime series in 2022. Set in the floating metropolis of Bayron City, the narrative blends romantic comedy elements with dark urban fantasy, focusing on a protagonist who forms a contract with a demon to handle supernatural threats. The project was created to explore complex interpersonal dynamics under the stress of high-stakes investigative work, with the manga adaptation—often associated with the Bayron City Express production entity—serving to expand upon the world-building and character perspectives presented in the animated medium.

The character designs for the project were conceptualized by Tsunako, an artist widely recognized for her distinct style in the light novel and gaming industries. Her visual approach emphasizes a contrast between the sleek, modern aesthetic of the city and the more gothic, ornate depictions of the demonic entities. Upon release, the series was noted for its departure from traditional romantic tropes, receiving attention for its narrative focus on the consequences of the lead character's morally grey choices, which solidified its position as a unique entry in the contemporary supernatural genre.
