ERIC: Thesaurus of ERIC Descriptors

The Thesaurus of ERIC Descriptors emerged from the Educational Resources Information Center, a project funded by the United States Department of Education. First published in the late 1960s and iteratively updated throughout the following decades, it was designed to serve as the standardized vocabulary for indexing and retrieving information within the expansive ERIC database, which focuses on educational research and literature. By creating a controlled vocabulary of preferred terms, known as descriptors, the system aimed to ensure consistency and precision for librarians, researchers, and policymakers navigating an ever-growing corpus of educational documents.

The publication was developed through the editorial oversight of the CCM Information Corporation, which collaborated with educational experts to refine the hierarchical structure of terms. The design process prioritized logical relationships between concepts, including broader terms, narrower terms, and related terms, to facilitate intuitive searching before the widespread adoption of modern algorithmic retrieval. It was received as an essential tool for institutional libraries and research centers, serving as the definitive authority for navigating the ERIC database for many years before its transition to a digital-only format.
