Where it came from
Even Gou-gou Is a Cat, originally titled Gou-gou datte neko de aru, is a seminal autobiographical manga series created by the acclaimed mangaka Yumiko Ooshima. Serialized beginning in the mid-1990s, the work chronicles Ooshima's daily life alongside her beloved Russian Blue cat, Gou-gou. The series emerged from Ooshima’s desire to document the profound emotional bond and the quiet, domestic rhythms shared between a human and their companion animal, effectively helping to pioneer the slice-of-life pet manga genre in Japan.
Ooshima is widely celebrated for her delicate, expressive art style and her ability to weave poignant philosophical reflection into seemingly mundane events. Her depiction of Gou-gou was praised by critics and readers alike for its realism and lack of sentimentality, focusing instead on the honest joys and inevitable sorrows of pet ownership. The manga’s influence extended beyond print, eventually inspiring a 2008 live-action film adaptation directed by Isshin Inudo, which further cemented the story's status as a contemporary classic of Japanese literature.
