Where it came from
Fake Slackers, known in Chinese as 'Wei Zhuang Xue Zha', is a popular web novel written by Mu Gua Huang. Initially serialized on the platform Jinjiang Literature City, the story emerged from the trend of Chinese campus youth literature, focusing on the dynamic between two high-achieving students who intentionally project an image of academic failure. The narrative is widely celebrated for its witty dialogue and the nuanced development of its lead characters, Xie Yu and He Zhao.
The physical volume releases of the series have been well-received by the fan community, often featuring distinct character illustrations that capture the lighthearted yet poignant atmosphere of the original web serialization. The design of these print editions generally emphasizes the dual personas of the protagonists, utilizing a color palette and aesthetic choices that align with the contemporary school-life genre. The series gained significant traction for its portrayal of friendship and identity within the high-pressure environment of the Chinese education system.
