Fang of the Sun Dougram + Armored Trooper Votoms

Published in the early 1980s, this volume represents the crossover manga adaptation of two seminal real-robot anime series, Fang of the Sun Dougram and Armored Trooper Votoms. During this era, Ryosuke Takahashi’s directorial works redefined the mecha genre by emphasizing grounded military aesthetics and political complexity, moving away from the super robot tropes of the previous decade. This specific compilation was crafted to capitalize on the immense popularity of these gritty narratives during the height of the anime boom.

The manga was illustrated by Yuu Okazaki, an artist frequently tasked with adapting complex television series into concise print formats for the Shogakukan magazine labels. Okazaki’s design approach prioritized action-oriented layouts, attempting to distill the sprawling, geopolitical conflicts of the Dougram insurgency and the dystopian brutalism of the Votoms world into a streamlined aesthetic. While these adaptations were often viewed as secondary supplements to the original animation, they remain significant historical artifacts of 1980s Japanese transmedia marketing and industrial synergy.
