Where it came from
The Fate/Extella Comic Anthology was published in 2017 as a supplementary volume tied to the release of the action video game Fate/Extella: The Umbral Star. Produced by Ichijinsha as part of their DNA Media Comics label, the anthology sought to expand the game's universe by featuring short, humorous vignettes and lighthearted scenarios centered on the popular Servants and Masters from the Fate franchise. These anthologies are a staple of the Japanese gaming industry, intended to provide fans with a playful alternative perspective on intense narrative properties.
The collection features a variety of contributors, with cover illustration duties handled by Sakaguchi. The artistic approach across the volume leans into a chibi-style aesthetic, which was chosen to emphasize the comedic tone that differentiates these anthology pieces from the darker, more dramatic central plotline of the main video game. Upon its release, the work was received as a lighthearted companion piece for established fans of the series, favored primarily for its character-focused gags and the stylistic flair of its diverse roster of contributing artists.
