Finding list for novels in the Mercantile library of Philadelphia

The Finding List for novels in the Mercantile Library of Philadelphia was published in the late 19th century to serve the patrons of one of the oldest private circulating libraries in the United States. Established in 1821 to support the education of young merchants and clerks, the Mercantile Library functioned as a subscription-based intellectual hub. This specific volume was produced as a practical bibliographic tool, designed to organize the library's expanding collection of fiction, which had grown significantly in popularity during the Victorian era.

The publication reflects the systematic approach to collection management common among 19th-century American subscription libraries. By categorizing novels by author and title, the library aimed to improve accessibility for members navigating the stacks. The cataloging style is representative of the era's focus on structured archival practices, ensuring that the Mercantile Library's literary resources remained useful and orderly for its diverse membership of professionals and scholars.
