Five Lecherous women

Five Lecherous Women is a representative work by Maki Miyako, a pioneering figure in the shojo manga landscape of the late 1960s and early 1970s. During this era, Miyako transitioned from traditional romance narratives to more mature, psychologically complex themes, reflecting the shifting societal expectations for women in Japan. This volume explores intricate character dynamics and domestic tension, characteristic of the author's refined, expressive illustration style that often featured elongated figures and intricate patterns influenced by contemporary fashion.

Miyako’s work during this period was often received as a bridge between the innocent girlhood stories of the previous decade and the burgeoning Gekiga movement, which favored darker, more realistic storytelling. While her earlier output targeted younger readers, this collection demonstrates her willingness to experiment with more provocative subject matter and adult-oriented drama. Her aesthetic choices, marked by delicate linework and a focus on emotive facial expressions, have cemented her reputation as a key stylist in the evolution of modern manga art.
