Where it came from
Forlorn Knights: Darksome Arising is a grim fantasy manga series written and illustrated by David Schmelling, emerging from the independent publishing landscape of the early 2010s. The work was conceived as a darker, more visceral exploration of the chivalric epic, intended to subvert traditional heroic tropes by focusing on the psychological erosion of its titular knights. Schmelling drew inspiration from atmospheric gothic literature and classic dark fantasy aesthetics to craft a visual language defined by high-contrast ink work and claustrophobic paneling.
Upon its release, the volume was noted for its uncompromising tone and intricate, often haunting character designs. While it occupied a niche space within the broader manga market, critics frequently lauded Schmelling for his atmospheric world-building and commitment to a bleak, singular artistic vision. The volume serves as a primary example of the creator-led independent manga movement that gained traction during the period, prioritizing stylized storytelling over mainstream commercial accessibility.
