Where it came from
Forza!! Roberto Baggio Monogatari, published in the mid-1990s, was created as a biographical manga series chronicling the life and career of Italian football legend Roberto Baggio. Authored by Yoshiyuki Osumi, the work sought to capitalize on the immense popularity of international football in Japan, which had been bolstered by the recent establishment of the J.League and the global media attention surrounding the 1994 FIFA World Cup.
The series captures Baggio’s evolution from his youth in Caldogno to his status as a world-class playmaker, often focusing on his technical mastery and the emotional highs and lows of his professional trajectory. Osumi’s storytelling aligns with the period’s penchant for dramatic sports journalism, framing Baggio as a quintessential hero figure for Japanese readers interested in the nuance and tactical sophistication of Italian Serie A football.
