Where it came from
The Gakken Manga New History of Japan series was commissioned as an educational resource to provide Japanese students with an accessible, narrative-driven overview of the nation's past. Published by Gakken, a prominent Japanese educational publisher, the series aims to bridge the gap between dry textbook academic content and engaging visual storytelling, aligning with the national curriculum to make history study more approachable for younger audiences.
Himekawa Akira, a creative duo widely known for their work on various manga adaptations, brought a distinct, character-focused aesthetic to this volume. By utilizing familiar manga tropes and expressive character designs, the team sought to humanize historical figures and clarify complex societal shifts. Upon release, the series became a staple in school libraries and home collections across Japan, praised by educators for its effective synthesis of rigorous historical data and reader-friendly pacing.
