Where it came from
GALS! was created by Mihona Fujii and serialized in the monthly manga magazine Ribon between 1999 and 2002. The series captures the height of the Kogal subculture in late 1990s Shibuya, focusing on the life of Ran Kotobuki, a teenager dedicated to maintaining her status as the top gal. Fujii intended the work to be a vibrant, humorous depiction of youth culture, emphasizing friendship and fashion during a unique period in Japanese social history.
The aesthetic of the series is characterized by the distinct fashion trends of the era, including platform boots, bleached hair, and high-contrast makeup, which Fujii rendered with high energy and bold lines. The manga was widely received as a definitive cultural touchstone for its time, eventually being adapted into a popular anime series titled Super GALS! Kotobuki Ran. It remains a notable example of shōjo manga that pivoted from traditional romance themes toward the celebration of urban teenage lifestyle and individual style.
