Where it came from
Ganbare Goemon 2: The Strange General McGinness was released in the mid-1990s as part of a wave of manga adaptations based on Konami’s popular Ganbare Goemon video game franchise. Drawn by Obi Hiroshi, this volume was serialized during a period when the series was expanding beyond its arcade and console roots, attempting to capture the whimsical, feudal-Japan-meets-modern-absurdity tone of the games for a print audience.
Obi Hiroshi’s artistic approach focused on translating the colorful, frantic energy of the games into a static medium. The work is characterized by its slapstick humor and exaggerated character designs, which remained faithful to the series' established aesthetic. While primarily targeted at young fans of the Nintendo consoles, the manga is now regarded by collectors as a nostalgic piece of the Ganbare Goemon multimedia expansion, reflecting the Japanese publishing trend of the era to build narrative depth around successful software titles.
