Gas Masquerade of Miasma

Gas Masquerade of Miasma, written and illustrated by Mizushiro Mizuki, emerged during a period of rising interest in surreal, dark psychological manga. The series was crafted to explore themes of environmental decay and social alienation, utilizing a distinct, heavy-ink aesthetic that emphasizes the claustrophobic atmosphere of its setting. Mizuki’s design choices were intended to evoke a sense of unease, favoring jagged line work and high-contrast shading to mirror the protagonist's descent into a miasma-filled world.

Upon its initial publication, the volume was met with moderate critical attention for its experimental narrative structure and unconventional visual style. While it did not reach mainstream commercial ubiquity, it became a noted work within underground manga circles, frequently cited by readers who appreciate gothic storytelling and auteur-driven art. The work remains a primary example of Mizuki's efforts to translate existential dread into the medium of serialized manga.
