The transition to a light novel series, illustrated by Daisuke Izuka, solidified the work’s aesthetic identity. The character designs lean into the distinct visual shorthand of mid-2010s Japanese media, balancing modern military gear with high-fantasy archetypes. Upon its official print release starting in 2010, the series garnered attention for its controversial political undertones and its unabashed exploration of Japanese nationalist sentiment, ultimately leading to a successful manga adaptation and a multi-season anime production that brought the series to a global audience.
