Where it came from
Genkaku Picasso was serialized in the seinen magazine Jump Square between 2008 and 2010. Created by the versatile mangaka Usamaru Furuya, the series centers on a high school student named Hikari Hamura who gains the ability to see the inner psyche of his peers. Following a fatal accident, Hikari is forced to use his newfound artistic talents to solve the problems of others to earn his own return to life, blending surrealist psychological exploration with a grounded high school setting.
Furuya is widely recognized for his distinct ability to bridge the gap between avant-garde art house sensibilities and mainstream manga aesthetics. In this work, he utilizes dynamic, shifting panel layouts to represent the distorted psychological landscapes of his characters. The series is noted for its evocative visual metaphors, drawing heavily on fine art influences as the protagonist literally draws the emotions of those around him to resolve their internal conflicts.
