Where it came from
Ghost Meets Gyaru, created by the artist KAERUDX, emerged as a serialized web manga that garnered attention for its unique fusion of the supernatural horror and gyaru subculture aesthetics. The series centers on the unconventional friendship between a young woman deeply embedded in Tokyo's gyaru fashion scene and the spirit of a deceased girl, offering a comedic and heartfelt exploration of life and the afterlife.
The character design reflects a deliberate contrast between the flashy, high-contrast aesthetic of modern gyaru fashion—characterized by heavy makeup, bleached hair, and stylized outfits—and the traditional, muted appearance of a classic Japanese yurei. KAERUDX sought to ground these distinct visual identities in a narrative that balances supernatural mystery with the everyday social dynamics of youth culture, receiving praise for its expressive art style and endearing character chemistry.
