Goldsmith. The traveller and The deserted village, ed. with notes by A. Barrett

This volume belongs to a tradition of nineteenth-century academic editions intended to make Oliver Goldsmith’s seminal eighteenth-century poems accessible to students. Published by Macmillan and Company as part of their English Classics series, the book features comprehensive notes by A. Barrett, a scholar who sought to contextualize Goldsmith’s reflections on social displacement and the rural landscape for a new generation of readers.

The design of the volume reflects the standard pedagogical approach of the Victorian era, utilizing clear, scholarly annotations to bridge the gap between the original publication of the poems and the late 1800s classroom. By providing historical background and linguistic analysis, Barrett’s editorial work ensured that the rhythmic, melancholic quality of Goldsmith's writing remained a staple in English literature curricula throughout the British Empire.
