Gorilla Goro-kun

Gorilla Goro-kun is a manga series created by Motoo Abiko, widely known by his pen name Fujiko Fujio (A). Published in the early 1970s, the work emerged during a prolific period for the artist, who was refining his signature style of blending domestic comedy with surreal, anthropomorphic characters. The series centers on a gorilla living within a human social environment, a narrative device frequently utilized by Abiko to explore themes of cultural displacement and the absurdities of daily life through a whimsical lens.

The character design reflects the mid-century aesthetic common in Japanese children’s manga, characterized by clean lines, expressive, rounded features, and an emphasis on visual humor. While perhaps less globally ubiquitous than the works created in collaboration with Hiroshi Fujimoto, Gorilla Goro-kun remains a notable entry in Abiko’s solo bibliography. It was received as a charming, lighthearted contribution to the gag manga genre, capturing the optimistic and inventive spirit of the post-war Japanese publishing boom.
