Where it came from
Gourmet Detective Goro Akechi is a manga series written and illustrated by Akiko Higashimura, first serialized in Shueisha's Cocohana magazine starting in 2015. The story follows a private investigator who is also a culinary connoisseur, utilizing his profound knowledge of food to solve complex murder cases. Higashimura, known for her sharp wit and versatile artistic style, blended the tropes of the classic mystery genre with high-end food culture, creating a unique subgenre within the seinen demographic.
The series is celebrated for its detailed depictions of gourmet cuisine, which stand in stark contrast to the dark and often unsettling nature of the crimes investigated. Higashimura’s design work focuses on the intersection of aesthetic refinement and human vice, capturing the meticulous detail of the meals Goro Akechi encounters. The manga received critical acclaim for its atmosphere and character depth, eventually being adapted into a live-action Japanese television drama in 2020.
