Greven's Kölner Adreßbuch

Greven's Kölner Adreßbuch originated as a comprehensive directory for the city of Cologne, established by the Greven publishing house. These volumes were produced annually to serve as essential administrative and commercial tools, mapping the shifting demographics, businesses, and professional residents of a rapidly industrializing Germany. They reflect the meticulous civic record-keeping tradition of the era, providing a snapshot of urban life that tracks the expansion of Cologne's infrastructure and the integration of its local economy.

The design of these directories prioritizes functional clarity, featuring dense, organized lists categorized by street, name, and trade. Greven's, a long-standing family firm, prioritized consistent data structure to ensure the volumes remained practical for daily use by merchants and government officials. While not designed as aesthetic objects, they are now regarded as vital historical artifacts for genealogists and urban historians, documenting the city's transformation through decades of social and architectural change.
