Karl Goedeke’s Grundrisz zur Geschichte der deutschen Dichtung stands as a foundational monument in German literary historiography. First published in the mid-19th century, the work was conceived as an exhaustive bibliographical survey intended to map the entirety of German literature from its earliest origins through the author's own time. It quickly became an essential reference tool for scholars, prized for its rigorous documentation and comprehensive scope in tracking editions, manuscripts, and the critical reception of German writers.

The later editions, such as this one, reflect the work's evolution as it was expanded and maintained by subsequent scholars like Edmund Goetze and others to account for ongoing research. The design of the volumes reflects the pragmatic requirements of a reference manual, prioritizing accessibility to bibliographic data over aesthetic ornamentation. It remains a hallmark of 19th-century German academic discipline, illustrating the period's commitment to creating systematic, encyclopedic records of national cultural heritage.
