Where it came from
Guardian of Fukushima was created by French author Fabien Grolleau and illustrated by Ewen Blain. The graphic novel was developed in the wake of the 2011 Tōhoku earthquake and tsunami, aiming to provide a reflective and culturally respectful narrative concerning the Fukushima Daiichi nuclear disaster. The story centers on a young man who returns to his family home in the shadow of the damaged power plant, using the framing device of local folklore to explore the environmental and emotional fallout of the catastrophe.
The creative team prioritized a somber, evocative visual style to balance the weight of the historical tragedy with the surreal elements of Japanese mythology. By incorporating the concept of a guardian spirit, the work functions as both a tribute to the resilience of the local community and a meditation on humanity's relationship with nature and technology. Upon its release, the volume was noted for its nuanced approach to a sensitive geopolitical subject, earning praise for its empathetic storytelling and artistic restraint.
