Gun Frontier: Harlock & Tochirou Seishun no Tabi

Gun Frontier was originally serialized in Play Comic magazine between 1972 and 1975, serving as a foundational piece in the expansive Leijiverse created by Leiji Matsumoto. The narrative acts as a prequel to the better-known Captain Harlock series, exploring the formative years of Harlock and his steadfast mechanic, Tochirou Oyama, as they traverse a Western-themed frontier world. Matsumoto crafted this work during a period where he was heavily experimenting with blending traditional genre tropes—specifically the American Old West—with his signature melancholic, space-faring character archetypes.

The visual design reflects Matsumoto's distinct aesthetic, characterized by elongated character proportions and meticulous attention to mechanical detail, particularly in the rendering of historical weaponry juxtaposed against alien landscapes. While the manga predates the widespread global popularity of the subsequent anime installments, it is historically regarded as the essential blueprint for the camaraderie and philosophical underpinnings that would define the protagonist dynamic throughout Matsumoto's later science fiction epics.
