Gundam EXA

Gundam EXA was serialized in Gundam Ace magazine starting in 2011, serving as a meta-narrative celebration of the franchise's history. Written by Tomohiro Chiba with illustrations by Koichi Tokita, the story follows Leos Alloy, a pilot who utilizes the G-Driver system to explore various historical timelines within the Gundam multiverse. The project was conceived as an ambitious way to bridge disparate series, allowing the protagonist to interact with iconic mobile suits and pilots from across the long-running saga.

The design of the central suit, the Extreme Gundam, reflects its role as a chameleon-like platform capable of manifesting the weaponry and combat styles of other legendary units. Koichi Tokita’s art style prioritizes dynamic, high-energy action, which helped the manga function both as a standalone narrative and a tribute to the visual language established by Kunio Okawara and other foundational mechanical designers. Upon its release, the series was received primarily by the existing Gundam enthusiast community as a clever, self-referential expansion of established canon.
