Where it came from
Hakkenden: Touhou Hakken Ibun was created by manga artist Abe Miyuki, beginning serialization in 2005. The work serves as a modern, reimagined interpretation of the 19th-century epic Nansō Satomi Hakkenden by Kyokutei Bakin, a foundational text of Japanese literature. Abe Miyuki transformed the classic samurai tale into a contemporary supernatural fantasy, centering on the survivors of a tragic village plague who are tied together by mystical peony-shaped birthmarks.
The series is celebrated for its lush, detailed character designs and its thematic exploration of identity and destiny. In moving the source material into a more stylized fantasy framework, Abe Miyuki focused on the intricate dynamics between the eight dog warriors, blending action with gothic-inspired aesthetics. The manga has garnered a dedicated following, eventually leading to a successful anime adaptation that further popularized the franchise's visual identity.
