Hanazakari no Kimitachi e

Hanazakari no Kimitachi e, often abbreviated as Hana-Kimi, was written and illustrated by Hisaya Nakajo and serialized in the manga magazine Hana to Yume from 1996 to 2004. The series emerged during a period of high interest in shojo manga centered on gender-bending themes and academy settings, following the protagonist Mizuki Ashiya, who disguises herself as a boy to attend an all-male boarding school to support her idol, the high jumper Izumi Sano.

Nakajo’s design for the series emphasized a balance of comedic situational humor and character-driven drama, moving away from more traditional shojo art styles toward a cleaner, more expressive aesthetic that resonated with a wide demographic. Upon its release, the series received significant critical attention for its lighthearted subversion of gender norms, eventually spawning multiple international television adaptations that solidified its status as a staple of the romantic comedy genre in manga.
