The Stieler Handatlas was first published by Justus Perthes in Gotha in 1817, representing one of the most significant cartographic achievements of the nineteenth century. Adolf Stieler, a lawyer by profession and a passionate cartographer by avocation, sought to create a standardized, detailed world atlas that could serve both scientific research and the practical needs of an increasingly globalizing society. The work was conceived as a rigorous, ever-evolving reference tool that aimed for extreme precision, moving away from the more ornamental map styles of previous eras to favor clear, data-driven topography.

The design of the atlas is characterized by its systematic approach to copperplate engraving and its commitment to updating geographical data with each edition. Following Stieler’s death, the Justus Perthes publishing house continued to refine the atlas through numerous subsequent editions, incorporating new findings from colonial explorations and changing geopolitical borders. It earned a reputation for reliability among scholars, diplomats, and educators, eventually becoming the standard German-language atlas for over a century and serving as a foundational piece in the history of institutional mapmaking.
